Taiwo Awoniyi induced coma: Super Eagles and Nottingham Forest striker Taiwo Awoniyi is reportedly in an induced coma and receiving intensive care following emergency surgery for a serious abdominal injury.
The 27-year-old Nigerian forward sustained the injury after colliding with the goalpost during Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Leicester City. Though he briefly continued playing following initial on-field treatment, he was later substituted. Forest confirmed on Tuesday, May 13, that Awoniyi underwent urgent surgery after the full extent of the injury was revealed on Monday, prompting his immediate hospitalization.
According to Mail Sport, early indications suggest the operation was successful. However, due to the complex and potentially life-threatening nature of the injury, Awoniyi was placed in a medically induced coma as part of his recovery process.
Forest noted that the striker is “recovering well,” though the severity of the situation led to strong reactions within the club. The incident also sparked controversy over the handling of the situation by the medical team. Awoniyi was unable to be substituted because Forest had used their final available change moments earlier, leaving him to struggle on the pitch before the team finished the match with 10 men.
Club owner Evangelos Marinakis appeared visibly frustrated at full-time and reportedly confronted head coach Nuno Espirito Santo. In response, the club released a detailed statement clarifying the events.

It emphasized Marinakis’ emotional investment, calling his reaction one of “deep care, responsibility, and emotional investment in one of our own,” and denied any confrontation with the coaching staff. The club also criticized its medical team for allowing Awoniyi to continue playing and called on public figures in football to avoid spreading misinformation and to prioritize player welfare over online commentary.
“We urge former coaches and players, and other public figures in the game, to resist the urge to rush to judgment and fake news online… Let concern come before commentary,” the club concluded.
