Saraki Leads PDP Reconciliation

Saraki appointed to lead PDP reconciliation committee ahead of upcoming NEC meeting.

Saraki Leads PDP Reconciliation: The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formed a reconciliation committee headed by former Senate President Bukola Saraki as part of its efforts to mend internal divisions ahead of the party’s crucial National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting set for the end of May.

The decision emerged from a strategic meeting held Sunday night at the Abuja residence of the PDP Governors’ Forum Chairman and Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed. The gathering brought together several influential party figures, including the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, who attended but declined to speak to the media. Also present were Governors Ademola Adeleke (Osun), Caleb Mutfwang (Plateau), Ahmadu Fintiri (Adamawa), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), and Peter Mbah (Enugu). Former governors in attendance included Liyel Imoke (Cross River), Achike Udenwa (Imo), Olagunsoye Oyinlola (Osun), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), and Seriake Dickson (Bayelsa), alongside Acting PDP National Chairman Umar Damagun and former Caretaker Committee Chairman Ahmed Markafi.

Speaking to journalists after the meeting, Governor Mohammed explained that the objective was to lay a foundation for a peaceful NEC session and a successful national convention later in the year. He emphasized that the inclusion of former governors was a strategic step to leverage their experience in resolving the party’s internal challenges.

Commenting on recent defections to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), Mohammed stated that the PDP remains resolute and is actively devising plans to regain control in PDP-led states. The recent defection of Delta State Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, his predecessor Ifeanyi Okowa, and other high-ranking officials to the APC last month has exacerbated tensions within the party.

Still on Saraki Leads PDP Reconciliation

The PDP has grappled with ongoing internal crises since the 2023 general elections, with factional conflicts and shifting alliances further straining party unity. A notable point of contention remains the unresolved rift between former Rivers State Governor Nyesom Wike and his successor, Sim Fubara, despite multiple interventions by the National Working Committee, Board of Trustees, and Governors’ Forum. Additionally, the defection of three senators from Kebbi State—Adamu Aliero, Yahaya Abdullahi, and Garba Maidoki—to the APC following a meeting with President Bola Tinubu has intensified fears among opposition leaders over the country’s potential slide toward a one-party system.

“I do not wish to return there. My spirit has already departed from that place,” Governor Fubara responds to calls for his reinstatement.
