New American Pope Emerges: American Cardinal Robert Prevost has become the 267th pope of the Catholic Church, taking the name Leo XIV.
At 69 years old, the Chicago-born cleric is the first American to ascend to the papacy and is regarded as a diplomatic figure within the Church.
Born in Chicago in 1955 to parents of Spanish and Franco-Italian heritage, Prevost served as an altar boy in his youth and was ordained a priest in 1982. Three years later, he relocated to Peru.
Holding dual nationality with Peru, Prevost is warmly remembered for his work among marginalized communities and his efforts in fostering unity.
He served for a decade as a parish pastor and seminary teacher in Trujillo, located in northwestern Peru. His ordination took place on June 19, 1982, following his studies in canon law at the Pontifical Saint Thomas Aquinas University, according to the Vatican Press biography.
Still on New American Pope Emerges
The late Pope Francis first appointed him in 2014 as the bishop of Chiclayo, Peru, and later brought him to the Vatican. Prevost has spent most of his ecclesiastical career in Peru, where he served as a missionary, teacher, and parish priest.
In April 2020, Pope Francis named him the apostolic administrator of the Diocese of Callao, also in Peru, as noted in his official profile.
Since 2023, he has held the role of Prefect of the Dicastery for Bishops at the Vatican, responsible for overseeing bishop nominations worldwide.
In an October 2024 interview with Vatican News, Pope Leo stated, “A bishop is not supposed to be a little prince sitting in his kingdom, but rather called authentically to be humble, to be close to the people he serves, to walk with them and to suffer with them.”
He also currently serves as the president of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.
