Viral Video Pastor Chris: The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has issued a public health advisory urging Nigerians to avoid excessive salt consumption after a viral video surfaced in which Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, founder of Loveworld Incorporated (Christ Embassy), advocated for increased salt intake among his followers. In the video, which gained significant attention on social media, Oyakhilome argued that Africans have been “deliberately discouraged” from consuming salt to foster a dependence on sodium-based medications. “They told you not to take salt so you can buy their drugs—drugs that contain sodium,” he stated during a church service. “Salt is not your enemy.”
In response, the health ministry advised Nigerians to follow scientifically-backed dietary guidelines and highlighted the serious health risks linked to excessive salt consumption. A statement signed by Alaba Balogun, Deputy Director of Information and Public Relations, emphasized the need to counter misinformation that could endanger public health.

“The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has noted a widely circulated video where a prominent religious leader encourages Nigerians to disregard medical recommendations on salt consumption,” the statement said. “While we hold faith and religious leaders in high regard, it is essential to correct misinformation that threatens public health.”
Balogun acknowledged that while salt contains sodium—an essential mineral for nerve and muscle function—overconsumption is linked to several non-communicable diseases. “Excessive salt intake is associated with high blood pressure, heart failure, stroke, and kidney disease, among other conditions,” he warned. He also referenced international dietary guidelines, stating, “The World Health Organization recommends a maximum of 5 grams of salt per day, approximately one teaspoon, for adults.”
The ministry concluded by urging the public to consult certified health professionals for guidance and to be cautious of advice not supported by scientific evidence.
