Former Vice President Mike Pence Receives Profile in Courage Award for Defending the US Constitution

Mike Pence Receives Award: BOSTON (AP) — Former Vice President Mike Pence invoked the Constitution in his acceptance speech for the John F. Kennedy Profile in Courage Award. Pence emphasized the document’s role in uniting Americans, stating, “To forge a future together, we have to find common ground… The Constitution is the common ground on which we stand.”

Pence received the award for his refusal to support President Donald Trump’s efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. On January 6, 2021, Pence faced immense pressure from Trump to reject electoral votes from swing states, but he ultimately upheld his constitutional duties. A mob of Trump supporters stormed the Capitol, chanting “Hang Mike Pence,” but he remained steadfast.

In his speech, Pence highlighted his commitment to the peaceful transfer of power, saying, “By God’s grace, I did my duty that day to support the peaceful transfer of power under the Constitution.” He also referenced his differences with Democrats and Republicans on issues like spending, tariffs, and Ukraine policy.

Pence’s actions were praised by Caroline Kennedy, daughter of President John F. Kennedy, who presented the award. She noted that Pence’s courageous stance served as a reminder that democracy should not be taken for granted.

The Profile in Courage Award honors public officials who take principled stands despite potential consequences. Previous recipients include former Presidents Barack Obama, George H.W. Bush, and Gerald Ford. Pence’s recognition comes as he has emerged as a prominent Republican voice critical of Trump’s actions.
