Cabals Hinder Refinery Progress: The President of Dangote Group, Alhaji Aliko Dangote, has revealed that a powerful ‘cabal’ within Nigeria’s oil and gas sector continues to resist the progress of his $20 billion refinery project.
Speaking at an investor forum in Lagos on Friday, May 2, as reported by Semafor, Dangote expressed confidence in overcoming the opposition, affirming his determination to see the refinery succeed.
“For a very, very long time, those who have profited immensely from government-subsidised fuel imports into Nigeria have been trying to sabotage the $20 billion refinery located in Lekki, Lagos,” he said.

He further explained that these groups have also financed opposition to President Bola Tinubu’s removal of petrol subsidies and are actively working to hinder the refinery’s operations.
Despite the challenges, Dangote remains optimistic: “We’re fighting, and the fight is not yet finished. But I have been fighting all my life, and I am ready and 100 percent sure I will win at the end of the day,” he stated.
It is worth noting that the Dangote Refinery began selling petrol in September 2024, resulting in a significant reduction in fuel imports into Nigeria.
