A man has been arrested in Greece on charges of spying for Russia

Man Arrested In Greece: Greek authorities have apprehended a 59-year-old man in the port city of Alexandroupolis on charges of espionage. He is accused of photographing military convoys transporting supplies to Ukraine and sending the images to a foreign contact via an encrypted messaging application. According to police statements and media reports referenced by AFP, the suspect, a Greek citizen of Georgian descent, was arrested on Tuesday, April 29, and appeared before an investigating magistrate on Friday, May 2.

In a police statement, it was revealed that the man “admitted to photographing and filming military equipment while acting on behalf of another person, to whom he sent the recordings via an encrypted application.” Investigators also disclosed that data retrieved from his mobile phone indicated he had been tracking military convoys intended for Ukraine.

A police source stated that the suspect, who claimed to be a painter, had previously served in the Russian military and was believed to have been recruited by Russia’s military intelligence agency, the GRU, through an intermediary. Greek media reports identified this intermediary as a Georgian national with suspected ties to organized crime, currently residing in Lithuania.

Alexandroupolis, a crucial hub for NATO supply operations, has grown increasingly significant in the context of military support for Ukraine. Although Greece shares deep cultural and religious connections with Russia, it has aligned itself with Western allies and supported Ukraine since the Russian invasion began in 2022.

The arrest highlights escalating security concerns regarding foreign intelligence activities in Greece and emphasizes the strategic importance of Alexandroupolis in ongoing regional military logistics.
