Minimum wage increment Edo: Governor Monday Okpebholo has announced an increase in the minimum wage for workers in Edo State, raising it from ₦70,000 to ₦75,000 to enhance their living standards.
The governor made the declaration during his May Day speech at the Samuel Ogbemudia Stadium in Benin City, Edo State, on Thursday, May 1. “Today, I am proud to announce that our administration has approved a new minimum wage of ₦75,000 per month for Edo workers,” he said.
He further stated, “It’s our way of saying thank you, Edo workers. We believe this will make a real difference, and in return, we count on your renewed dedication as we build a better Edo together.”
Since taking office, Governor Okpebholo’s administration has prioritized worker welfare. One of their early actions was converting numerous casual workers, including over 1,000 cleaners who previously lacked job security, into permanent positions within the core civil service, providing them with stability and peace of mind.
The governor also mentioned the recruitment of 500 new teachers to reduce classroom pressure and improve student learning. Additionally, his administration is reviewing the status of over 3,000 casual teachers in the state, with plans to offer them full employment due to their crucial role in shaping the future of the children.

To strengthen the state’s healthcare system, the governor disclosed the recruitment of 450 clinical and non-clinical staff for state hospitals and the regularization of 126 contract staff at the Edo State Specialist Hospital. These efforts aim to improve job stability for health professionals.
Okpebholo also noted that his administration had cleared outstanding salary arrears owed to staff at Edo State Polytechnic, among other initiatives to improve workers’ lives.
He also emphasized the administration’s commitment to the judiciary, ensuring that judges whose appointments were delayed had been properly sworn in and were now fulfilling their duties.
Lastly, the governor highlighted the introduction of health insurance coverage for retirees, stressing that the state’s responsibility to workers extends beyond their active service.
