Fubara Wike peace talks

Suspended Governor Fubara reportedly visited Wike at his residence to seek reconciliation

Fubara Wike peace talks: Suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, reportedly visited the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, at his Abuja residence to seek reconciliation, according to Premium Times.

The visit is said to have taken place on Friday, April 18, shortly after Fubara met with President Bola Tinubu in London to discuss the ongoing political crisis with Wike. The dispute between the two leaders led to the declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State and the suspension of Fubara and several other elected officials for an initial period of six months. Fubara was reportedly accompanied to Wike’s home by Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun and former Governor Olusegun Osoba.

“Fubara was brought to the minister’s house on Friday, 18 April. He prostrated before Wike, held his legs, and called him, ‘My Oga,’” a source told Premium Times. The meeting reportedly continued into the early hours of Saturday, April 19. While the exact details remain undisclosed, sources say Wike instructed Fubara to rally his supporters, including influential Rivers elders, to clarify the circumstances behind their fallout.

Wike’s spokesperson, Lere Olayinka, confirmed the meeting but said he had no knowledge of the discussions. Fubara’s spokesperson, Nelson Chukwudi, declined to comment and directed all inquiries to the Commissioner for Information, who did not respond.

The rift between Fubara and his predecessor Wike began less than six months into Fubara’s tenure, splitting the Rivers State House of Assembly. Twenty-seven lawmakers aligned with Wike, while only three remained loyal to Fubara. The governor recognized the three-member faction, arguing that the others had forfeited their seats by defecting from the PDP to the APC. However, a Supreme Court ruling on February 28, 2025, overturned Fubara’s position, reinstating the pro-Wike lawmakers as the legitimate assembly. The ruling also suspended federal allocations to Rivers State and nullified local government elections held under Fubara’s administration.

Still on Fubara Wike peace talks

On March 14, the House of Assembly served Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu, with a notice of alleged misconduct. The accusations included mismanagement of state funds, unauthorized appointments, interference with legislative duties, and withholding of lawmakers’ salaries and allowances. Deputy Governor Odu was also accused of enabling illegal appointments.

The impeachment notice coincided with Fubara’s efforts to comply with court rulings, including the removal of local council chairpersons. His compliance was seen by some as an attempt to reduce political tensions.

However, the declaration of emergency rule and the suspension of elected officials have sparked widespread public outrage across Nigeria.
