Baba Ahmed criticizes Tinubu: Dr. Hakeem Baba-Ahmed, a former Special Adviser on Political Matters to the Vice President, has said that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu is “really and genuinely isolated.”
Speaking in an interview on ARISE TV, Baba-Ahmed reflected on his time in the Tinubu administration, revealing it fell short of his expectations. He disclosed that despite joining the government with high hopes, the experience turned out to be disappointing.
When asked whether Vice President Kashim Shettima was being sidelined, Baba-Ahmed dismissed the notion, explaining that vice presidents often lack clearly defined roles in Nigerian administrations. He noted that although he interacted with Vice President Shettima almost daily, the office demanded more than mere conversations.
Baba-Ahmed shared that he only encountered President Tinubu three times — all during prayers at the mosque in the presidential villa — and never had the opportunity for a direct conversation with him. He added, “Tinubu never had time for people like us. I don’t think he had time for a lot of people working for him.”
Describing Tinubu’s isolation as a major concern for the country, Baba-Ahmed said, “He ought to be available to the people he trusts and who work for him. That’s the problem for the country, not just for him.” He raised concerns about the quality of advice reaching the president, suggesting that many close to Tinubu seemed detached from the realities facing Nigerians.
Still on Baba Ahmed criticizes Tinubu
Highlighting the country’s worsening mood, Baba-Ahmed spoke of widespread despair, insecurity, and public disillusionment. “People are asking, what is the value of this democracy?” he said. He emphasized the need for the president to be surrounded by capable advisers who address real issues.
On political developments, Baba-Ahmed distanced himself from current coalition efforts, saying he had no interest in joining them. He reiterated calls made in an earlier open letter for President Tinubu to consider stepping aside ahead of the 2027 general elections. He urged Tinubu to pave the way for a younger generation of leaders, stating, “Our generation has done its time.”
Reflecting on the administration’s performance, Baba-Ahmed criticized the failure to translate the energy from Tinubu’s inauguration into effective governance. He described the Renewed Hope Agenda as a collection of campaign slogans rather than a serious governance plan and questioned the competence of much of Tinubu’s cabinet, saying more than half “have no business managing an administration tasked with improving security, livelihoods, or public trust.”
Baba-Ahmed, who resigned after about 18 months in office, warned that focusing prematurely on 2027 elections could derail governance and any real progress for the country.
