Nwebonyi speaks on justice

Senator Nwebonyi asserts that any situation where a woman falsely accuses a man should be condemned

Nwebonyi speaks on justice: Senator Onyekachi Nwebonyi, representing Ebonyi North, has urged women in politics to show respect to their male counterparts.

Speaking at an empowerment event held at the Abakaliki Local Government headquarters on Wednesday, April 23, the Deputy Chief Whip of the Senate criticized women who, according to him, show disrespect toward men.

Although he did not specify any individuals, Nwebonyi cautioned that such behavior sends a negative message about the future of women in Nigerian politics.

“I am one of those championing the emancipation of women in politics. But that does not mean that the rights and dignity of men should be undermined,” he remarked.

“In any situation where a woman unfoundedly accuses a man, it should be condemned. Telling a man to ‘shut up’ in the Senate or anywhere else is unacceptable. We must support and respect our mothers, but those who do not align with us should be shown the way out of power and politics,” he emphasized.

This statement follows a public verbal altercation Nwebonyi had with former Minister of Education, Oby Ezekwesili, during the hearing of a petition filed by Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan of Kogi Central. Akpoti-Uduaghan had accused Senate President, Godswill Akpabio, of sexual harassment.

Additionally, Senator Akpoti-Uduaghan filed a defamation lawsuit against Nwebonyi, seeking N5 billion in damages. The lawsuit stems from remarks Nwebonyi made during an interview on Channels TV’s Sunrise Daily program on March 6, 2025, where he labeled her a “gold digger,” “habitual liar,” and “habitual blackmailer.” Akpoti-Uduaghan has argued that these accusations are completely false, malicious, and defamatory.
