Gunmen Fire At Vehicle: South Africa’s Deputy President, Paul Mashatile, has reportedly escaped a suspected assassination attempt after gunmen fired at his official bulletproof vehicle on the N12 highway. The incident took place while Mashatile and his security convoy were returning from an ANC National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting at the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg.
Reports indicate that the deputy president’s vehicle was hit multiple times on the windscreen during the attack. His spokesperson, Keith Khoza, confirmed that Mashatile was inside the car at the time. “We can confirm that there was an incident in which the car of the deputy president was hit,” Khoza stated.

Though initial details were limited, an expert analysis confirmed that the damage to the vehicle’s windscreen was caused by bullets. “The police are best placed to respond to the question; however, I can confirm that we have a report confirming from an expert that these were bullets,” Khoza added.
Preliminary evidence from the scene suggests that up to 12 spent cartridges were found, although the exact number of shots has not been officially verified.
Thanks to the bulletproof nature of the vehicle, Mashatile was unharmed in the incident. The South African Police Service, in coordination with the Presidential Protection Unit, has launched a joint investigation into the attempted attack. The identity and motive of the attackers remain unknown, but authorities are treating the matter with urgency as inquiries continue.
