Pope Francis Meets Crowds from Popemobile Amid Ongoing Recovery

Pope Francis Easter Appearance: Pope Francis, still convalescing from a severe bout of bilateral pneumonia and other health complications, appeared on a balcony overlooking St. Peter’s Square in Rome on Easter Sunday. Despite his fragile health, Francis greeted the massive crowd with a proclamation, “Christ, my hope, has risen,” before handing over his text to Archbishop Diego Ravelli to read aloud.

Before addressing the crowd, Francis had a brief meeting with Vice President J.D. Vance at his apartment in Casa Santa Marta. According to the Vatican, the meeting lasted a few minutes and provided an opportunity for the two to exchange Easter greetings. This meeting marks a notable encounter between the Pope and the Vice President, given their previous disagreements on immigration policies. Vance has been a prominent supporter of the Trump administration’s strict immigration measures, which Francis has publicly criticized as a “disgrace” and a “major crisis” for the United States.

In a show of resilience, Francis made a rare appearance in an open-air popemobile after the Easter morning Mass, which drew over 50,000 devotees to St. Peter’s Square. The 88-year-old Pope sat in a raised chair as thousands cheered “viva il papa,” and he made several stops along the square. The square was adorned with tens of thousands of flowers arranged in intricate, colorful patterns by Dutch florists, marking the 39th year of this tradition.

The Pope’s health issues have been well-documented, with a hospital stay of over five weeks in February and March. During this time, physicians considered halting treatment to allow him to die peacefully due to complications from bilateral pneumonia, including acute respiratory insufficiency and a polymicrobial infection. However, the Pope’s personal health assistant, Massimiliano Strappetti, instructed the medical team to “try everything, don’t give up.” Francis was released from the hospital on March 23 and has since been recovering, albeit on a shortened schedule.

Vance and his family, including his wife Usha Vance and their three children, were in Rome for the Easter holiday weekend. They attended a Good Friday service at St. Peter’s Basilica, and Vance also met with other high-ranking Vatican officials and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. The Vice President’s visit to the Vatican highlights the complex dynamics between the US government and the Catholic Church, particularly on issues like immigration
