Deadly Russian Missile Strike

Deadly Russian Missile Strike on Kharkiv Leaves 1 Dead, 82 Injured

Deadly Russian Missile Strike: A Russian missile attack on Ukraine’s northeastern city of Kharkiv on Friday morning resulted in one fatality and 82 injuries, including six children. The strikes damaged apartment buildings, an educational institution, and a business, according to the emergency services.

Devastating Impact on Civilians

The attack had a devastating impact on civilians, with many residents left shaken and injured. Inna Khrystych, a resident of one of the affected apartment buildings, described the horror of the attack, saying, “Everything went flying in all rooms, the windows shattered… My husband died.” Andriy Ponomarenko, another resident, recounted how he and his wife rushed to find their four-year-old daughter amid the smoke and shattered glass after being woken by the strike. “We first thought the blood was mine but turned out she got a cut by her eye,” he said.

Damage and Destruction

The attack damaged 15 apartment buildings, according to preliminary information from Ihor Terekhov, the mayor of Kharkiv. The emergency services reported that the strikes also damaged an educational institution and a business. Reuters video showed emergency workers giving first aid to people with bleeding wounds near one of the apartment buildings.

International Response

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy condemned the attack, saying, “This is how Russia began this Good Friday – with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, Shaheds – maiming our people and cities.” Ukraine’s foreign minister, Andriy Sybiha, also criticized Russia, stating, “Russia is a terror machine. It will only stop if we confront it with true strength.” Sybiha made these comments a day after meeting with US, French, German, and British envoys in Paris.

Details of the Attack

Ukraine’s foreign minister said Russia launched four missiles at Kharkiv, three of them ballistic and carrying cluster warheads. This type of attack is particularly concerning due to the potential for widespread harm to civilians.

Broader Conflict

The attack on Kharkiv is part of a larger conflict between Russia and Ukraine. Despite a US-brokered moratorium on strikes against energy infrastructure, both sides have accused each other of violating the agreement. Zelenskiy said that Russia has reduced the number of its strikes on Ukrainian energy facilities but is instead targeting civilian infrastructure.

Additional Attacks

In addition to the attack on Kharkiv, a drone attack on Sumy, another northeastern city, killed one person and injured another at a factory baking Easter cakes. These attacks highlight the ongoing violence and humanitarian crisis in Ukraine.

Still on Reactions and Concerns

The international community is likely to be concerned about the escalation of violence and the impact on civilians. The use of ballistic missiles and cluster warheads raises serious questions about Russia’s actions and the need for a peaceful resolution to the conflict.
