Navy Seizes Smuggled Rice: The Nigerian Navy has announced the interception of over 1,300 bags of smuggled foreign parboiled rice in the Majidun community of Ikorodu West Local Government Area, Lagos State.
This was revealed in a statement by Lieutenant Hussaini Ibrahim, Base Information Officer for the Nigerian Navy Ship (NNS) Beecroft.
According to Commodore Paul Ponfa Nimmyel, Commander of NNS Beecroft and Maritime Component Commander of Operation AWATSE, the seizure occurred on Saturday, April 12, during routine security and anti-smuggling operations carried out by the Operation AWATSE team.
The statement detailed that several vehicles suspected of engaging in smuggling attempted to bypass a security checkpoint, prompting a swift response from the Operation AWATSE Quick Response Team (QRT), in line with the Joint Task Force’s Standard Operating Procedures.
“The operation, executed with high professionalism and restraint by the Maritime Component of Operation AWATSE, recorded no casualties,” the statement noted. “The rapid intervention by the QRT and successful interception of the contraband underscore the continued dedication of the operation to supporting statutory agencies in combating smuggling.”
A total of 1,306 bags of smuggled foreign rice were subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Customs Service, Western Marine Command, Apapa, on Wednesday, April 16, 2025, in accordance with the Harmonized Standard Procedures on Arrest, Detention, and Prosecution.
