Chinese Fighter in Russia Describes Strict Security Measures.

Russia enforces tight protocols: A 34-year-old Chinese man, identified as Wang Guangjun, claimed he was tricked into fighting for Russia’s military and described being guarded so closely that he couldn’t even go to the bathroom alone. Wang and another Chinese man, 27-year-old Zhang Renbao, stated they were captured in Donetsk and spoke to the press in Kyiv in hopes that China would notice their situation and negotiate for their release.

Wang’s Account:

– Deception and Training: Wang said he entered Russia believing he would work as a rehabilitation therapist for Moscow’s troops but was instead deployed on the front lines. He described being trapped after reporting for work in Moscow in early 2025 and undergoing training before being sent to Ukraine.

– Strict Security: Wang claimed that escape was impossible due to the presence of guards with loaded guns and military police. He stated, “If you go to the bathroom in the middle of the night, there will be a guard with a loaded gun following you.”

– Deployment and Surrender: Wang said he was deployed on April 1 in Donetsk and could only communicate with his commanders via sounds and hand gestures. He described a chaotic situation on the front lines, where he and his comrades were attacked by drones, leading to the deaths of several soldiers. The survivors eventually surrendered to Ukrainian forces.

– Surrender: Zhang said he ran until he encountered Ukrainian soldiers, who took him into custody.

Claims and Responses:

– Ukraine’s Stance: Ukraine claims to have evidence that over 150 Chinese people are fighting for Russia, but there’s no indication that their presence is sanctioned by Beijing.

– China’s Response: China has stated that it has always advised its citizens to stay away from the war and called on the relevant party to refrain from making irresponsible remarks about China’s role.

– US Perspective: Unnamed US officials cited by Reuters believe that most Chinese citizens fighting for Russia are mercenaries .
