2026 qualification still possible: Nigerian football icon Austin ‘Jay Jay’ Okocha remains optimistic about the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup — but says the team must take full control of their destiny.
Despite a shaky start to the qualifiers, Okocha believes all hope is not lost. However, he insists that only a flawless run from here on can keep their World Cup dream alive.
The Super Eagles reignited some optimism with a win over Rwanda, but that momentum was quickly halted by a disappointing 1-1 home draw with Zimbabwe. That result saw Nigeria drop to fourth place in their group, six points behind leaders South Africa.
Still on 2026 qualification still possible
Still, Okocha — a veteran of three World Cup tournaments — hasn’t given up on the team.
“If we want to give ourselves any chance of qualifying, we have to be thinking of winning all our remaining matches,” he told iDiski Times.
“Bafana Bafana are top of the group — it will be a tough game, but I believe we can go there and win. If we want to qualify, those are the games we need to win.”
